OUR STORY
Open water and marathon swimming does not have to be a solo sport.
Northland's population is dispersed and this can make it difficult to meet others within a niche sport, but the richness and breadth of skill and experience in Northland is quickly apparent. Experienced olympic and open water swimmers, multi-sporters, specialty open water coaches, volunteer lifeguards, event organisers and existing swimming social groups have all come together in collaboration, to develop in our sport together.

What do I need for safe sea swimming?
A swim buddy, a tow float and local knowledge.
There are sociable open water swimming events and get-togethers which we will share on our News page. These remain at the swimmers own risk but can be a fun way of safer swimming and meeting like-minded people.
- Know the water you are swimming, its rips, hazards and peculiarities.
- Be visible, know your limits and swim within them.
- Make sure someone on land knows your plans and route, and swim with a buddy.
- Prepare for your exit and warming. Beware of the "after-drop" * particularly if you are not swimming in a wetsuit.
- Share your experiences with your Northland open water swimming colleagues via our NOWSA Facebook page!

What do I need for a long distance swim?
- Technique
- Training
- Tenacity
Whatever our swimming prowess, we can always benefit from coaching, whether tweeking technique or regular interval training.
We can help! Regular squad training in the pool in a friendly social setting with a renowned coach will help you achieve your personal goals and introduce you to new friends with a common interest.
See our training squads page.
